Before you send
“I want to text them.”
Six questions, ninety seconds, before you press send. This is not here to stop you — it is here so that whatever you do next is chosen by you rather than by the urge.
- 1What happened?
- 2What are you feeling right now?
- 3What do you want to send?
- 4What are you hoping they will say back?
- 5How will you feel if they don't answer?
- 6What do you actually need right now?
Everything you write here stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored on our servers or seen by anyone.
What is happening right now
- 1Something happensA short reply, a changed plan, a silence, a tone. Often small, often ambiguous.
- 2I read it as a threatThe ambiguity is filled in with the meaning you most fear: they are pulling away.
- 3Anxiety risesThe body reacts before the thought is examined — chest, stomach, urgency, restlessness.
- 4I seek contact or confirmationMessage, call, check, test, apologise, over-explain. Anything that ends the not-knowing.
- 5Temporary reliefThe answer arrives and the body calms. The loop has just been taught that it works.
- 6The need returnsBecause the certainty came from outside, it fades — and the next ambiguity starts the loop again.
The point of intervention is between step three and step four — the moment before you act. Recognising the loop while it is happening is the whole skill.
