Reciprocity is the real green flag

Fairy Godmother

Why Reciprocity Is the Real Green Flag

We spend so much time looking for signs that someone likes us.

He watched my Story. She replied with a heart. He liked my photo. She took three hours to answer, but maybe she’s just busy.

We analyse messages, emojis, eye contact, likes, follows and tiny changes in someone’s behaviour.

But there is a much simpler question that can tell you far more:

Is the interest reciprocal?

Because attraction can be exciting. Chemistry can be intoxicating. But reciprocity is what makes a relationship possible.

What does reciprocity actually mean?

Reciprocity means that interest, effort, respect and emotional investment move in both directions.

You don’t always have to initiate. You don’t always have to plan the date. You don’t always have to start the conversation. You don’t always have to ask how they are. You don’t always have to repair the relationship after an argument.

There is a natural movement towards each other.

You reach out. They reach out. You listen. They listen. You make an effort. They make an effort. You show vulnerability. They gradually feel safe enough to show theirs.

It doesn’t have to be perfectly 50/50 every day. Life isn’t a spreadsheet. Sometimes one person needs more support than the other.

But over time, there should be a feeling of mutuality.

Attention isn’t the same as reciprocity

Someone can give you enormous amounts of attention without genuinely investing in you.

They might flirt with you. They might compliment your body. They might message you late at night. They might tell you that you’re beautiful.

They might even say: “I miss you.”

But ask yourself: Are their actions moving towards the relationship you want?

Because words can create excitement. Consistency creates trust.

Attraction isn’t commitment

Someone can be attracted to you and still not want a relationship. Someone can enjoy talking to you without wanting a future with you. Someone can desire you physically without being emotionally available.

None of this necessarily makes them a bad person. It simply means that their desire may not match your desire.

And that is where reciprocity becomes so important.

Don’t only ask: “Does he like me?”

Ask: “Does he want the kind of relationship I want?”

That’s a much better question.

Reciprocity is not chasing

When you’re very attracted to someone, it can be tempting to do more and more.

More messages. More attention. More gifts. More explanations. More patience. More chances. More forgiveness.

And sometimes we call this “fighting for love.”

But there is a difference between fighting for a relationship and carrying a relationship alone.

A relationship cannot be built by one person doing all the emotional work.

You can open the door. You cannot make someone walk through it.

Look for patterns, not isolated moments

One missed message doesn’t mean someone isn’t interested. One cancelled date doesn’t automatically mean they don’t care. One difficult week doesn’t define a relationship.

Look at the pattern.

Do they consistently make space for you? Do they follow through? Do they make plans? Do they want to know you? Do they remember things that matter to you? Do they respect your boundaries? Do they communicate when something is wrong? Do they make an effort to repair things after conflict?

Do you feel that you are moving towards each other, or constantly trying to close the distance?

The pattern tells you much more than a single text message.

The greenest flag of all

A green flag isn’t simply: “He texts me every day.” It is: “We both want to be here.”

It isn’t: “He always replies quickly.” It is: “I don’t have to constantly wonder where I stand.”

It isn’t: “He gets jealous because he cares.” It is: “He trusts me and respects my freedom.”

It isn’t: “She can’t live without me.” It is: “She chooses me while still being her own person.”

Healthy love doesn’t require you to constantly prove that you’re worthy of being chosen.

Stop asking, “How do I make them choose me?” Ask: “Are we choosing each other?”

That question changes the entire dating experience.

You stop trying to decode every little signal. You stop turning someone’s inconsistency into a puzzle you need to solve.

You stop believing that if you just become prettier, more patient, more available, more sexual, more understanding or more perfect, they will finally give you the relationship you want.

Instead, you observe. You listen. You communicate. And you notice whether the person in front of you is meeting you halfway.

Because love shouldn’t feel like an audition. You shouldn’t have to perform for someone to decide whether you’re worthy of love.

The healthiest relationships aren’t built on one person chasing and the other deciding whether to allow themselves to be caught. They are built by two people walking towards each other.

That’s reciprocity. And that is one of the most beautiful green flags there is.

The Fairy Godmother Reminder

Don’t just look for chemistry. Look for consistency. Don’t just look for attention. Look for intention.

Don’t just ask whether they want you. Ask whether they are willing to show up for you.

And above all: Don’t measure your worth by how hard someone is willing to chase you. Measure the relationship by how willingly you choose each other.
